Hace poco menos de un año escribí una nota sobre Angela, una austriaca que llegó a Perú y se quedó por el amor de un hombre. Pasado un tiempo cambió los motivos de su estadía por un nuevo amor: la playa de Máncora.

Sin conocer a mucha gente en la playa norteña decidió ir contra el dicho que advierte “no solo de pan vive el hombre” y se dedicó a hacer diversas preparaciones de este básico alimento. Y durante unos años ya solo de pan vive ella.

Los prepara al estilo europeo, con granos integrales, como pasteles de sabores y ahora está empezando también con las galletas.

A Angela la ví por primera vez cuando me sancochaba bajo el sol en las Pocitas. Pasó como un espejismo, con su bici cargada de canastas, un sombrero, carteles que anunciaban sus productos y una tintineante campanilla. Al año siguiente se repitió el encuentro y conversé con ella para hacer la nota que copio en las últimas líneas.

Hoy la volví a encontrar, (después de caminar un poco, ya que ningún lugareño me dio el dato de su ubicación… ¿envidias comerciales o de verdad no la conocen? No lo sé) igual de empeñosa y sonriente, pronunciando mejor el español, todavía con una bicicleta, pero también con un nuevo local que entra a competir con los otros ubicados en la Panamericana que cruza el pueblo de Mancora.

La cafetería de Angela ofrece pasteles, sánguches y jugos naturales, todos ellos muy bien explicaditos en su carta bilingüe.

A mi me gustan sus pasteles, creo que sobre todo porque siento en ellos el empeño que pone esta mujer al hacerlos, sus ganas y buena fe. A Freddy no le gustaron y dejó que me comiera sola el brownie de chocolate y plátano y el strudel de manzana que se suponía era para compartir.

Si bien es cierto esta cafetería no es como para almorzar, si es ideal para un desayuno o lonche saludable. ¡Y que sigan los éxitos Angela!

From Austria to Mancora beach (2005)

While resting in the white sand of Mancora beach or when walking by its boulevard looking the crafts made of shells, wood, stone and thread that locals and foreigners offer, its possible to listen a jingling sound coming from a cute bicycle with a basket that is driven by a blond and tan woman. That woman, always with a smile in her face, is Angela.

Angela Schmitzberge left Austria when she felt in love with a Peruvian and arrive to Mancora beach, a northern beach of Peru, located 130 kilometres north of Piura city and 1165 away from Lima. Now, five years after her arrival, she has another reason to continue living in Mancora, she felt in love with that little beach that gave her something she didn´t found in Austria: tranquillity and endless summers.

She stopped being an environmental engineering in Austria to became a bakery cook in Mancora, which is appreciated by all the treat lovers that enjoy of her preparations. When Angela opens the breads basket that carries on her bike its like a voyage to a cosy home with home made bakery, sweet flavours and smells. Inside its possible to find little muffins and bigger breads of chocolate, banana, carrot, coconut and the typical Austrian apple strudel, among others.

Angela says that she prepares them using the receipts that she learned when a child looking to her mom in Austria, and now adds Peruvian ingredients as the maca, kiwicha and quinua to the breads.

At the begging she cook all by herself but then the demand of her products increased as the number of visitors looking for the sun in the summer also did, and she is now working with two helpers and planning to change her bicycle rides for a store where she cold sell the products.
